Description
TBD Devastator Over Wake Island, Feb. 1942A TBD Devastator of the US Navy participates in one of the first offensive strikes by the navy in World War II, on the recently-lost Wake Island. 24 February, 1942. The TBD was withdrawn from service after being virtually wiped out by the Japanese defenses at the Battle of Midway two months later. Old and slow, crews of the Torpedo Bomber squadrons of the US Navy flew into the jaws of destruction, their pyrrhic sacrifice leading to the conditions that allowed Dauntless dive bombers to sink four carriers and turn the tide of the Pacific war.
